Public health insurance is provided free to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It provides access to basic medical services such as medical exams, medically necessary surgery and drugs administered through the hospital, for example. In Grande Prairie this coverage is provided through Alberta Health Services. To register for your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage, visit a participating registry agent. Changes to coverage can be made at any time free of charge.
Once you have registered, you will receive a government-issued health card which you will need to bring with you every time you access a medical service. Note that all provinces and territories will provide free emergency medical services even if a person does not have a government health card.
Restrictions may apply for public insurance for immigrants. The Interim Federal Health Program offers temporary coverage to eligible immigrants.
To receive coverage for health services not insured under AHCIP, you may considering starting an insurance plan with a private insurance company. Many employers also offer health benefits to their employees.
